Pocomoke City – Joseph “Joe” M. Byrd, Sr., 83, of Pocomoke City, died
Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in
Salisbury.

Born March 17, 1925 in Accomack County, VA, he was a son of the late
William R. Byrd, Sr. and the late Laura May Witham Byrd and was
preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Jeanne Byrd, on April 26,
2002.

Joe was a graduate of Pocomoke High School. He served in the U.S. Navy
during WW II as a signalman and he retired from Delmarva Power after
37 years service as a serviceman. Joe was looking forward to
celebrating 60 years as an active Pocomoke City Volunteer Fighter this
year. Other memberships include; Life member of Pocomoke Elks, member
of Pocomoke American Legion Post #93, Delmarva Vol. Fireman’s Hall of
Fame and St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. An avid sportsman, he was one of
Pocomoke High School’s most dedicated fans, missing very few home
games and attending many away games.

He is survived by one son, Joseph M. “Joe Mel” Byrd, Jr. and his
wife, Ruth; two granddaughters, Ashley S. Trader and her husband,
Anthony and Kelsy Byrd; two great granddaughters, Londyn Grace Trader
and Camryn Clarke Bodley, all of Pocomoke City; one brother, C. Ames
Byrd and his wife Donna of Greenbackville; two sisters-in-law, Audrey
Byrd of Onancock and Gladys Byrd of Pocomoke City and many nieces and
nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two
brothers, Bill Byrd and Charles Byrd.

Family and friends may call Sunday from 6pm to 8pm at the Holloway
Funeral Home and Monday from 1pm to 2pm at the Lynnhaven Baptist
Church in Pocomoke City, where a funeral service, officiated by Rev.
Gregory Powell, will be held at 2PM. Interment will follow, with
military and firefighter honors, in the St. Mary’s Episcopal Cemetery
on third street in Pocomoke City.
