How do I know when to respond to calls?
When there is an “alarm,” our pagers and siren are activated. Members are provided with a pager that will alert them to a call in our first due area. Pagers can also monitor other calls in the county. Members will also get a message and alert on their cellular device (optional).
What do I do when there is an alarm/call?
When there is an alarm, members proceed to the station, don their gear, and board the apparatus that is due for the call. Members are required to follow all traffic laws while responding to the station.
What training do I need to join?
None! We will assist you in signing up for training. We always welcome those who may have previous training.
Is training provided, and does it cost money?
All training is provided free of charge. Training is done through the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI). The minimum training required for members is the completion of a Maryland Firefighter I course, as well as CPR certification. In addition to Firefighter I, there are several other training programs designed to help members expand their knowledge and skills in the fire service. This also includes Emergency Medical Services (EMS) classes, such as Emergency Medical Technician Basic training.
When and where is training?
Training locations vary, but there are areas available at several locations across the state. Generally, training classes are held at the Lower Eastern Shore Regional Training Center (LESTRC) in Princess Anne, which is part of MFRI. The LESTRC is located on John Wilson Lane behind the U.M.E.S. campus. Most practical components of fire classes are held at the LESRTC. Some classroom sessions are held there or at a specific department. Departments can request to have a class, such as Firefighter I, and the classroom sessions would be held at that location. What are the minimum requirements for members?
Members are required to make 50 LOSAP points each year. Members need to earn 40 points in the alarm category, attend 6 meetings, and complete 6 drills. This will total 50 LOSAP points.
When are meetings and drills?
Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at 7 PM. Dinner is served at 6 PM. Drills are held on the third Thursday of the month at 7 PM.
What is LOSAP?
LOSAP stands for Length of Service Award Program, which is how we determine a member’s years of service. After meeting LOSAP for three years, members are eligible for a Maryland Tax Credit of $7,000.
Do you have career staffing in your department?
No. The PCVFC has been 100% volunteer since its inception in 1888. We’re proud to be the only 100% volunteer department in Worcester County.
What is a box alarm?
Worcester County uses “box alarms” as a type of dispatch for calls. There are multiple types of boxes that require different pieces of apparatus, depending on the incident type. Example: A “fire alarm activation” or AFA is a “Local Box” which is a single company response, and only we respond. A “Fire Box” could be residential, commercial, or agricultural. Depending on the type of structure involved, Pocomoke, along with other allied agencies, would respond. The box calls for specific apparatus from the closest stations. Example: Pocomoke is due for an engine, rescue, tower; Stockton is due for an engine; New Church is due for an engine; Snow Hill is due for a ladder, etc. Box alarms allow for apparatus and personnel to get on the road to get help to neighboring agencies sooner.
What is Pocomoke's Station number?
Pocomoke is Station 100.
Do I need to live in Pocomoke to be eligible to join?
Yes and no. To apply for membership as a cadet or firefighter, yes, you must reside within our first due area. Our response area is roughly from the MD/VA line, up to Rehoboth Rd. (667), and up to Betheden Church Road. To apply to be an Auxiliary member, there is no residency restriction.
What are the age requirements to join?
To join as a cadet, applicants must be 16 years of age and enrolled in high school, or entering high school during the summer. To join as a firefighter or Auxiliary member, applicants must be 18 years of age.
Do you have Ambulances at your station?
No. Several years ago, the decision was made to separate the fire and EMS services. EMS relocated to Eighth Street and became its own entity, Pocomoke City Emergency Medical Services. The City of Pocomoke later assumed responsibility for the EMS service.
Do you have a live-in or associate's program?
No. We do not currently have an associate's or live-in program.
