Engine 2 – 1964 American LaFrance “900 Series”
In 1964, the department placed into service Engine 2, a new American LaFrance “900 Series” fire engine. The apparatus featured a cab-forward design with a canopy cab, continuing the department’s progression toward improved visibility, crew protection, and operational efficiency.
Engine 2 was equipped with a 1,000 GPM fire pump and a 750-gallon water tank, providing strong initial attack capability and sustained fire suppression for both structural and rural firefighting operations. The apparatus served as a reliable front-line engine during a period of continued growth and modernization within the department.
In 1982–1983, Engine 2 underwent a rehabilitation by Pierce Manufacturing in Wisconsin, extending its service life and ensuring continued operational reliability. Following many years of service, the engine was sold in 1998 to the Saxis Volunteer Fire Company in Accomack County, Virginia, where it continued to serve the fire service community.
Engine 2 is reported to have been scrapped around 2012, marking the end of its service life after decades of firefighting duty across two departments.
Engine 2 remains an important part of the department’s apparatus history, reflecting the evolution of American LaFrance cab-forward designs and the department’s ongoing commitment to maintaining capable and modern fire suppression equipment.
